Q. An employee was terminated last month, and we just re-hired him. Can he be put back on the plan without having to re-serve the waiting period?

If an employee is re-hired within 6 months of their termination, and we are notified within 31 days of the date of re-hire, coverage can be reinstated without re-serving the waiting period. All we need is a written request to reinstate the coverage stating the date the employee returned to work for you.

Q. I forgot to add my dependent child last year when he/she was born. Can I do it now?

It depends on the coverage you hold and the type of program your employer has.

  • If you hold Family coverage, the child will be added to your coverage effective their date of birth.
  • If you hold Single coverage, and your plan is mandatory, family coverage will be backdated to the date of birth of your child.
  • If you hold Single coverage, your plan is non-mandatory, and your child was born more than 31 days ago, you will also need to complete a Statement of Dependent’s Health, and medical underwriting will be required.

Q. I just noticed that one of our employees terminated last year and we forgot to notify you. What happens with the premiums we have paid? Can they be refunded to us?

Terminations should be submitted to our office as soon as possible once an employee has left your employment. Notifications should be sent within 31 days to prevent claims from being paid or future premium being charged. We may refund up to 3 months worth of premium.

Q. If my spouse and I have no children, can we both take Single coverage with no penalty in the future?

Yes, you can both take Single coverage with no penalty or restriction to future coverage. However, when you do have children, one of you will need to change your coverage to Family coverage within 31 days of the birth of the child. The other spouse could then cancel their Single coverage under the health and / or dental benefits.

Q. Can I assign a young child as a beneficiary?

Yes. If the child is a minor under the age of 18, however, you must also assign a Trustee as per the instructions on your Enrolment Application.

Q. What should I do if I am in an emergency situation and am totally unconscious? How will the ambulance or hospital know I am covered?

Most paramedics will try to see if there is a coverage card or an emergency contact name in your wallet. Paramedics are also trained to look through your cell phone for ICE (In Case of Emergency) numbers.

Q. Why is my drug card not working?

The most common reason for problems with your drug card is that the pharmacist does not have your correct date of birth on system. Please verify with them that they are keying in your correct date of birth, and whether you are the employee or spouse.
